Tubeless Sealant: How To Measure, Top Up & Maintain
Fresh Goods Friday 798: The Urn Yr Turns Edition
By Kristina, Lead Editor, CyclingTrend.com
Hello, and welcome to the end of the world week. The group chat is fried, your shock pump is missing (again), and someone has decided now—mid-March, mid-mud, mid-everything—to re-litigate whether tubeless sealant is meant to be measured in millilitres or vibes.
Which brings me neatly to today’s theme: How do you like your sealant? Not as a philosophical question—though cycling will happily turn it into one—but as a litmus test for how you ride, how you maintain your bike, and whether you’re the kind of person who owns a torque wrench for “peace of mind” or for “content.”
Sponsored by Yellow Jersey. (Because nothing says adulthood like insurance and a calendar reminder to top up your tyre goo.)
The Great Sealant Personality Quiz (You Didn’t Ask For)
1) The Minimalist: You top up when the tyre sounds like a maraca. Your sealant strategy is “whatever came in the bike shop install.” You don’t carry a syringe; you carry optimism.
2) The Methodical Mechanic: You’ve got a measuring bottle, a logbook (spreadsheet), and a strongly held opinion about valve core tools. Your tyres are always correctly dosed, and your rims are cleaner than your kitchen.
3) The High-Volume Realist: You ride rocky, you ride hard, you puncture like it’s your hobby. You don’t want “enough sealant,” you want insurance. You’re basically running a small dairy in each tyre.
4) The Tech Maximalist: You heard the words “graphene,” “low friction,” and “measured fills” and blacked out briefly. You don’t just want sealant; you want a system—preferably one that looks good on a workbench.
The truth is, all four types are right—until they aren’t. Sealant isn’t magic; it’s preventative maintenance with a messy personality. But the way you manage it says everything about whether your ride ends with a triumphant post-ride espresso or a late-night session scraping latex boogers off your rim bed.
Measured Fills, Unmeasured Emotions
I’ve been thinking a lot about the rise of precision in our lives as riders. We’ve got apps to tell us our sleep is terrible, dashboards that tell us our FTP is “fine,” and now we’re being offered devices to dispense sealant like we’re running a tiny service course in the garage.
On one hand: brilliant. Sealant waste is real—spills, half-used bottles, dried-out sludge in the bottom, lids glued shut by yesterday’s good intentions. On the other hand: we are absolutely the sort of species that will overcomplicate a simple task just to avoid the more difficult one, which is actually doing it regularly.
Because here’s the thing nobody wants to admit: most tubeless failures happen less from “bad sealant” and more from “sealant that has quietly retired without informing you.” Sealant dries. Sealant clumps. Sealant migrates into weird tyre pockets like it’s trying to start a new life. And if you’re the set-and-forget type, you’re essentially gambling that your next puncture occurs while the chemistry is still in the mood to help.

My Practical Take: What Matters (and What’s Just Shiny)
What matters:
- Freshness. Top-ups beat heroics. If you can commit to a schedule, your puncture rate will plummet.
- Compatibility. Not all sealants play nicely with all tyres, inserts, or CO₂. Know what you’re running.
- Volume. Underfilling is the silent killer—especially for larger-volume MTB tyres and high-speed gravel.
- Cleanliness. Old gunk can stop new sealant from sloshing effectively. Sometimes the fix is a clean-out, not a top-up.
What’s mostly shiny:
- Exotic claims of watts saved if you’re not already consistent with the basics.
- Ultra-premium “tools for tools’ sake” if you never service at home and always end up at the shop anyway.
But I’m not here to scold anyone out of buying nice things. Cycling is hard. Let people have their little luxuries—especially if those luxuries reduce waste, improve consistency, or simply make the chore of maintenance slightly less grim.
Workshop Picks: The Stuff That Actually Improves Your Sealant Life
These are the practical bits I see riders return to again and again—whether you’re a commuter, a weekend warrior, or the friend who somehow becomes the default mechanic on group rides.
- The world’s first tubeless sealant and the first choice of riders today
- Recommended for all-around use, compatible with all tubeless road, gravel, and mountain bike tires
- Seals punctures up to 6.5mm (¼”)
- Compatible with valve installation using Stan’s Tubeless Sealant Injector
- Remains liquid inside tires for 2-7 months for long-lasting protection)
- GOING TUBELESS?: Our MTB Sealant is tough as nails. With a formula that’s optimised to combat flats on gnarly off-road terrain, it plugs holes up to 6mm up to 80psi making it the perfect choice for MTB, Enduro or Downhill bikes.
- SEALS UP TO 6MM: This badass sealant contains cutting-edge molecules that will seal tears and holes up to 6mm so that you can laugh in the face of punctures. It also seals porous tyres and bead/rim gaps - making it an essential weapon in your tubeless armoury!
- LONG-LASTING: Our tyre sealant for bikes is engineered for maximum performance. One application will last up to six months in temperate climates and won’t ball up. This nifty non-corrosive formula is super easy to use and will easily wash off when prepping your ride for a refill!

So, How Do You Like Your Sealant?
Personally? I like it boringly effective, topped up on schedule, injected cleanly through the valve, and paired with the humility to carry a plug kit anyway. I like sealant that does its job quietly—no drama, no miracles required.
Because the best sealant is the one you don’t think about on the ride. And the best sealant routine is the one you’ll realistically keep doing when it’s raining sideways, your hands are cold, and you’d rather be scrolling through new bike releases you absolutely do not need.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go check whether the tyres on my “I swear I rode it last week” bike have turned into two large, silent snow globes of dried latex.
FAQ: Tubeless Sealant, Without the Mythology
How often should I top up tubeless sealant?
Most riders should check every 2–4 months. Hot/dry climates, lightweight casings, and high mileage can shorten that. If you hear dried clumps inside when you spin the wheel, you’re overdue.
How much sealant do I need?
It depends on tyre volume and use. As a rough guide: gravel (35–45mm) often takes ~40–60ml; MTB tyres commonly take ~80–120ml. Heavier riders, rocky terrain, and inserts may justify more.
Can I add sealant without removing the tyre?
Yes—remove the valve core and inject through the valve with a syringe. It’s cleaner and faster than unseating the bead, and it makes routine top-ups far more likely to happen.
Does sealant expire?
Unopened bottles last longer than opened ones, but sealant can separate or thicken over time. If it’s lumpy in the bottle, smells off, or pours like cottage cheese, don’t put it in your tyres.
Will sealant fix every puncture?
No. It’s great for small cuts and pinholes. For larger holes, sidewall damage, or big tears, you’ll likely need a plug, boot, or a tube to get home.
Is CO₂ bad for sealant?
Some sealants don’t love CO₂ and can coagulate faster. If you use CO₂ to seat a tyre or inflate trailside, it’s smart to deflate and reinflate with regular air later if possible.
