Pogacar Milan-San Remo Tactics: UAE’s Finale Gameplan
A tactical debate: How should Pogačar and UAE play the Milan-San Remo finale?
By Kristina, Lead Editor at CyclingTrend.com
Milan-San Remo remains cycling’s greatest contradiction: nearly 300 kilometers that often feel like a group ride until, suddenly, it’s the most violent 20 minutes of the season. In an era of data-driven racing and increasingly scripted outcomes, La Primavera still refuses to behave. It’s long but not mountainous. Selective but not reliably so. Prestigious yet maddeningly hard to “force.”
And that’s exactly why Tadej Pogačar’s relationship with San Remo is so fascinating. He can win almost any race by making it hard. San Remo, stubbornly, won’t always get hard in the right places—or stay hard long enough. For UAE Team Emirates-XRG, the question is no longer “Can we make the Poggio decisive?” It’s: How do we make the entire finale—Cipressa to Via Roma—hostile to the kind of rider who can beat Pogačar in a reduced sprint?
Let’s talk tactics, and specifically the ones that actually matter in the final hour.
What Pogačar must avoid: the “perfect” reduced sprint
If you’re UAE, your nightmare isn’t a 40-man bunch sprint (that’s unlikely in modern San Remo). It’s a 10–20 rider group where Pogačar has done the most work and then faces a rider who can both follow on the climbs and still kick—think Mathieu van der Poel types, or a punchy-fast finisher who has simply ridden economically.
Pogačar’s strengths—repeatability, punch on steep grades, fearless descending—are real assets here. But San Remo punishes one specific sin: being the only one committed to making it hard. If Pogačar lights the Poggio and only one rider comes with him, that can be a gift. If three or four come with him and UAE has burned the entire matchbook to get there, that’s where the race slips away.

Principle #1: UAE must make the Cipressa matter—without making it a solo mission
Everyone says, “Attack on the Poggio.” Fine. But if the group hits the Poggio with 60 riders, you can attack all you like—there will be wheels, drafts, and fresh legs everywhere. The real leverage is the Cipressa: long enough to grind, early enough to create doubt, and close enough to the Poggio that gaps can become panic.
The ideal UAE script is not “Pogačar attacks on the Cipressa.” It’s “UAE makes the Cipressa unpleasant enough that the peloton arrives at the Poggio already stressed and short on helpers.” That means:
- A hard but controlled tempo from the bottom—no surges that invite counterattacks you must cover.
- One acceleration near the steepest section, not necessarily from Pogačar, but from a teammate who forces other teams to spend riders.
- Zero panic if it comes back—the goal is attrition, not separation at any cost.
In other words: don’t try to win the race on the Cipressa, but do try to ensure the race can be won on the Poggio.
Principle #2: On the Poggio, Pogačar needs a two-step attack—not one nuclear strike
The Poggio is short and chaotic. A single, all-or-nothing launch often creates the same outcome: one or two follow, a few others limit losses, and the group reforms on the descent or the flats when hesitation begins.
Pogačar’s best play is a two-step:
- First move: a hard acceleration to shed dead weight and isolate key rivals. Not maximum—just enough to force everyone into the red.
- Second move: after 20–30 seconds of suffering, when riders think the danger has passed, he hits again—harder, cleaner, and timed to the moments where drafting is messy.
This approach does two things: it increases the odds that only the “real” threats make it over, and it makes those threats arrive at the top with less snap for the sprint.
Principle #3: UAE should treat the descent like an offensive phase, not damage control
The Poggio descent isn’t merely technical theater—it’s where San Remo winners often secure the final 5–10 seconds that become decisive. If Pogačar crests with one or two riders, the descent is the next selection point. UAE doesn’t need him to take irresponsible risks; they need him to keep pressure on. A clean, fast descent forces collaboration from anyone with him. If a rival is thinking, “I can sit on and sprint,” a high-pressure descent disrupts that comfort.
And if Pogačar crests with a small group? Then UAE must embrace a counterintuitive truth: sometimes you don’t pull. Not immediately. If you’ve done the attacking and someone else has saved energy, let them show their cards. San Remo is one of the rare races where a moment of tactical stubbornness can be more valuable than 30 seconds of steady watts.
The big debate: Should Pogačar ever gamble on the sprint?
There are two schools of thought:
- School A: “Never sprint with Van der Poel.” Make it solo or die trying.
- School B: “A small group is survivable if you arrive with momentum and others have worked.”
I land in a third, more pragmatic place: UAE should plan for a sprint, but refuse to race for one. That means Pogačar positions like a sprinter—top 10 wheels, sheltered, attentive—while still being willing to attack. It’s not contradictory. It’s modern Monument racing.
If you’re always “all-in” on the solo move, rivals can ride defensively and trust numbers. If you’re always “all-in” on the sprint, you’ll get outkicked. UAE’s edge is ambiguity: make rivals unsure whether they’re covering an attack or preparing for a sprint they might still lose.
Three concrete UAE endgame scenarios
1) The dream: Pogačar + one rider over the top
If it’s just one companion, UAE wants full gas to the line unless the companion is a pure sprinter type. Force shared work by keeping the descent quick and the flat decisive. If the other rider refuses to pull, Pogačar should still commit—because even a small gap can hold on the Via Roma when the chasers hesitate.
2) The danger: Pogačar + 3–6 riders (including a faster finisher)
This is where UAE must become political. Make others work. Skip turns. Attack again with 2–3 km to go, not to get a huge gap, but to disrupt the lead-out logic and force messy positioning.
3) The chaos: 20+ riders regroup
If the Poggio doesn’t stick and the group is big, UAE’s best hope is not heroics—it’s positioning and timing. Pogačar can still launch late (inside 2 km) if he has teammates to guide him into the final cornering sequence. Without that, he risks being boxed and forced into a pure sprint from too far back.

FAQ
Why is Milan-San Remo so hard to control?
Because the decisive climbs are short and come late, drafting remains powerful, and team depth is often depleted by distance rather than climbing. It’s easy for strong riders to stay in contact until the final moments.
Should UAE try an early long-range attack?
Generally no. Long-range moves in San Remo tend to donate helpers to other teams and reduce UAE’s ability to dictate the Cipressa-Poggio sequence. UAE’s best leverage is concentrated in the final 30 km.
Is the Cipressa or the Poggio more important for Pogačar?
The Poggio is where he can separate. The Cipressa is where UAE can remove the support systems that help rivals survive the Poggio. For Pogačar, the Cipressa is the enabler; the Poggio is the execution.
What’s the biggest tactical mistake Pogačar can make?
Attacking in a way that only benefits the riders most capable of following him—then towing them to the line. If he can’t go solo, he must ensure the group dynamics are uncomfortable and uncertain.
Can Pogačar win from a small sprint group on Via Roma?
Yes, but it depends on who’s there and how the group arrives. If he’s done repeated accelerations and forced others to work—or if the sprint is disorganized—his odds improve dramatically. If he’s been the engine, they don’t.
San Remo doesn’t reward the strongest rider as reliably as other Monuments. It rewards the rider who can make strength look like options. For UAE, the mission is simple to state and brutally hard to execute: arrive at the Poggio with rivals isolated, then race the descent and the flats as if they’re still climbing. If they do that, Pogačar won’t need the race to be predictable. He’ll just need it to be honest.
